What Makes the Equipment Different
A smoke extract fan is not a big ventilation fan. No. Comfort extraction moves air in normal conditions; smoke ventilation has to keep working in hot smoke, start automatically off the fire detection system, and survive long enough for people to get out. The fans, the cabling, the dampers and the controls are all certified for that duty, and an ordinary ventilation fan of the same airflow is not a substitute.
